Woman washes bomb in kitchen sink

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Should you come across a possible unexploded bomb in the garden, the advice is not to place it in the kitchen sink and wash it. Yet this is what Carole Longhorn did when she discovered the metal projectile whilst gardening at her home in Melton Constable, Norfolk. Caroles husband Clive said I heard a rattle in the kitchen and saw she was washing it in the blooming sink! The 25cm long object, thought to have been a World War II projectile, was eventually blown up in a controlled explosion. Carole, aged 66, said she shouted to her husband, who was inside the house, after she dug up the explosive. I called my husband to come and have a look at it but he wouldnt so I brought it indoors, she said. Clive said his wife then washed the bomb in the kitchen sink before taking it outside again. You can imagine what I said to her, he said. She took a few precautions, he added. She put a plastic seat on the top in case it went off. Clive called the police and the couple were advised to leave the house. They returned just as a bomb disposal squad from RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire turned up at their house on Wednesday. They said it was live and that we were very lucky, Mr Longhorn said. The bomb was detonated at a nearby quarry. A spokesman at RAF Wittering said the projectile more than likely dated back to World War Two. We couldnt be sure it wasnt live so took the precaution and detonated it, he said. He stressed that anybody finding an item they were unsure about should leave it.
