Water Rationing a Possibility

Caroline Spelman, Environment Secretary, warned yesterday that unless water consumption is reduced, rationing would have to be used to conserve supplies. Mrs Spelman said We think of water as free, falling from the sky in abundance. It is only when rivers start to run dry, reservoirs fall low, cracks emerge in the ground that the old certainties are shaken. We cannot do without water. It is in many ways our most precious resource. So we must act now to make the changes needed to keep our rivers flowing and our water supplies reliable and affordable. The goal is for everyone to save 20percent by 2030. With water bills expected to rise, saving water will also save money too. The kitchen is one of the biggest users of water and there are several things you can to cut your water consumption. Fit aerators on the kitchen tap - not only does it reduce water consumption it also gives you a champagne flow. Fix leaking taps use the opportunity to fit a new more water efficient tap. Dont rinse fruit and vegatables under running water, use a bowl instead. Ditto washing hands in the sink. Use a dishwasher as they use less water for washing than washing up pots and pans.
