Waste management specialist InSinkErator has claimed that sink waste disposal units are key to achieving challenging goals for cutting the levels of biodegradable waste at landfill sites. The manufacturer highlighted the dangers of methane generation at landfill, identifying kitchen waste disposal units as a simple means of reducing the food waste burden and reducing biodegradable landfill waste to 35 per cent of 1995 levels by 2020.In-Sink-Erator claimed that 6.7 million tonnes of food is sent to landfill sites by UK households each year, while 80 per cent of household waste is either reusable or recyclable, a contradiction that some local councils are helping to address.Jeremy Howell Thomas, Worcestershire Council waste management officer, was quoted as saying We all need to start understanding the benefits of installing food waste disposers. They can work in harmony with other recycling methods to play a big part in helping the environment.Select local councils across the UK have recently offered an incentive of cash subsidies to local residents looking to purchase a sink waste disposal unit and cut down on their food waste footprint.
