The kitchen of the future is being designed by experts at Newcastle University as part of a major new project. It is called the Ambient Kitchen and includes cutting-edge technology that is designed especially for the use of elderly people. This includes electronic tags and sensors built into work surfaces, utensils, cupboards and appliances, which can monitor the progress of people in the kitchen as they prepare food from a special set of recipes. As the kitchen is programmed to understand the recipes, if a problem occurs, advice on what to do is printed onto the wall facing the cook. The project is part of a 12 million scheme at Aberdeen, Newcastle and Nottingham to concentrate on using digital technology to help people in everyday life.Lord Drayson, minister for science and innovation, said The unique thing about the new hubs in Aberdeen, Newcastle and Nottingham is the focus on designing digital technology that includes people from all walks of life.
