Householders could be shelling out hundreds of pounds more than they need in electricity bills by running inefficient kitchen appliances, according new research by Which? The consumer magazine is advising people who are considering buying a new appliance to take into account its running costs as well as the upfront price. Which? Has now created an online calculator which, it states, will reveal the running costs of fridges, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and televisions. The Which? Calculator shows users how much individual models cost to run over a year, as well as the appliance lifetime, based on current electricity costs. Consumers can also search for specific models and can compare different models. Using the Which? Calculator, a Hotpoint RF175M fridge freezer will cost 426 to buy and will run for seven years, whereas an Indesit BAN12F fridge freezer is 50 cheaper to buy but will cost an extra 195 to run over the appliances lifetime.
