Surge in demand for local produce

Kitchens sinks across the UK could soon be full of locally-grown fruit and vegetables as the demand for local produce rises.More people are taking an interest in local produce, according to the Plunkett Foundation.The rural communities charity says nine out of ten consumers have an interest in buying local food in the future.Its Making Local Food Work research also revealed that two-thirds of customers want to take a more active role in how their food is produced.Katherine Darling, spokeswoman for the Plunkett Foundation, said There is a very clear movement towards buying local produce.An increasing amount of people want to know more about where their food comes from.Farmers markets and community-owned shops are great stockists of local food, she added.However, shoppers may need to be wary of misleading labelling, according to the charity.A report by Local Government Regulation (LGR) found that at least 18 per cent of claims which said foods were locally produced were false.ADNFCR-1321-ID-800437415-ADNFCR
