The renowned Juicy Salif lemon squeezer has been described as a work of art for the kitchen.Created by product designer Philippe Starck for the Italian design house Alessi, the item was first produced back in 1990 and is still available for 43 from Alessi.com.The Salif is made from cast and polished aluminium and stands at 29 centimetres high, with the juicer sitting on top of three legs that have the appearance of sleek, squid-like tentacles.Criticised as an exercise in form over function particularly as the juicer has been described as rather ineffective the item has nonetheless become a symbol of kitchen elegance and extravagance and is even showcased at Londons Design Museum.Speaking to the Independent, Michael Czerwinski, who works at the museum, said Starck has imbued what was a perfectly adequate kitchen drawer filler with aspirational desirability, indications of intellectual meaning and a mythical lack of juicing prowess. Writing for the food section of Gather.com this week, interior design expert Owen Jones argued that functionality has become increasingly important due to the kitchens status as the heart of the home.
