A solar oven made from a single piece of plastic has won the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Talent Initiative competition. The oven was designed by John Tilleman from Brown University, Rhode Island and landed him a 20,000 prize. It was designed to solve the needs of the worlds poorest people. The competition was launched last autumn at a CII career event in Manchester and attracted more than 1,000 entries from universities around the world.Entrants had to present their products and ideas in front of more than 700 people to a panel of four judges in a Dragons Den-style situation.Sian Fisher, CII board member and head of agency operations at Oxygen Insurance, was on the judging panel. She said of the winning solar oven What I loved about this idea was its simplicity, its practical nature and risk free technology. Overall it has an obvious benefit to humanity. An organisation called Solar Cookers International was established in 1987 to spread solar cooking awareness and skills throughout the world. It has enabled 30,000 African families to cook using the suns power.
