Sinks and taps test results

Consumer Reports recently tested 18 double-bowl and 16 single-handle pullout taps with some interesting results. During the testing process, the sinks, made from six different materials, were stained and scoured. Blunt and sharp objects were dropped into the sinks and hot pans were placed in them. Consumer Reports say that the vigorous testing procedures destroyed a number of myths, including the suggestion that sink brand is the most important factor. A number of big brands were tested, including American Standard, Elkay, Franke, Kohler, and Moen. However, it was the material that the sink was made from that led to the best results with stainless-steel sinks coming out top in most tests. Solid-surface sinks came a close second, although a hot pan or a sharp knife still caused some damage. Testers did not find a big difference between a 115 stainless-steel sink and one that cost as much as 420 or between an 80 tap and one at 600. In addition, more costly, thicker-gauge stainless steel didnt necessarily perform better than thinner models. All the sinks were able to withstand stains, heat and dings, although some did dent. Superior valves, tougher finishes and lifetime warranties are available on all but the cheapest taps. Coloured sinks made of solid surfacing, enamelled steel, enamelled cast iron or fireclay were dented or chipped in the tests and acrylic sinks did melt slightly when a hot pan was placed in them.
