People are increasingly looking to design their homes with kitsch and affordable home accessories, it has been claimed.Emily Chalmers, owner of retro interiors boutique Caravan in Londons East End, told the Independent her customers like to furbish their homes with her collected items found at trade fares, jumble sales and flea markets. Its all about styling with what youve got, she said, adding I find the idea of gutting a place and buying everything new quite scary. The newspaper also spoke to Lizzie Evans, owner of Smug, an interior store in Islington, which mixes original 50s kitchen furniture and glassware with other retro items like Pyrex dishes and vintage woollen throws. Ms Evans said such items attract a wide range of people, from someone looking for a present for his partner who loves everything in the shop, to local companies furnishing their offices and a hotel in Japan. The news comes after it was suggested more people may look to buy efficient food waste disposers for their home kitchens after the government changed its stance on local authority recycling charges this week.
