Homeowners planning to renovate their kitchens in 2011 could look to past designs to stay on trend.Retro kitchens will be a big design trend in the next few years, according to Anita Kaushal.The interior designer says a mix and match style is becoming more popular.Designers could use contrasting kitchen sinks and worktop materials to incorporate a range of styles.Speaking at the Ideal Home Show, Ms Kaushal said households are starting to see the kitchen as a social part of the home.She said The kitchen is now becoming the place where people gather.It used to be the living room, but [now thats moved to] the kitchen island.Small sofas can be placed in kitchens to say youre welcome, she added.Gathering around the kitchen table at mealtimes could also hold psychological benefits.According to psychologist Professor Geoff Beattie, family meals encourage better eating habits and healthier attitudes to food.Conversation during meal times or while washing up at the kitchen sink could help children develop cognitively.
