An al fresco kitchen and sink are the new must-haves for keen hosts, according to this years Chelsea Flower Show. Experts are predicting that outdoor kitchens will continue as an increasing trend and that green-fingered entertainers will need to produce more than the odd barbecued sausage if they really want to impress their guests. Theres an increasing trend for outdoor living and entertaining, for using the garden as a place where people and families gather, said Geoffrey Wheating, director of garden furniture firm Gaze Burvill which had its new line on display at the show. People are entertaining outside more and the British weather is no barrier you just have to plan how to deal with it, he added. Out goes the dilapidated barbecue, in comes the full outdoor kitchen, complete with sink, fridge, wood-burning oven and even heated seats, if this years show is anything to go by. Celebrity Jerry Hall, supermodel ex-wife of Mick Jagger, was clearly impressed with the shows display of hand-made oak kitchen units housing a fridge by Sub-Zero Wolf, a plate warmer and enamel sink by Shaws of Darwen. The kitchens are made to order but each unit, which includes an appliance, is believed to cost approximately 3,000. A further 2,145 will get you an elegant matching kitchen trolley with space for a champagne bucket. The display was completed by oak chairs, a table with parasol and sun loungers. A grate housing electric heating elements was positioned in the floor under the table and seats to provide the added warmth that might well prove to be a vital requirement for UK customers.
