New gadget for kitchen waste disposal

Leicester County Hall has unveiled a new in-sink kitchen gadget which it says will encourage greener waste disposal practices. The council developed the device - which chews up leftover food and flushes it into the sewer - as a way of discouraging local residents from disposing food refuse in bins. Tests on the device found it to be suitable for meat scraps, vegetables, bread, tea bags, and even small bones - all of which are shredded to pieces before being flushed down the drain. Commenting on the benefits of the new machine, Councillor Nicholas Rushton told the Leicester Mercury that wider uptake of the gadget would divert large amounts of waste from landfill sites, thereby reducing the burden of waste in years to come. Critics, however, said the device is far from revolutionary and merely diverts the problem of food waste - something they say can only be addressed by encouraging on-site local composting.
