A diocese of the Church of England is set to grant funding to a major new multi-faith centre, featuring kitchens tailored to the needs of different religious groups.Aiming to create the first building of its type in the UK, the University of Surrey-run Guildford project will cost 6.5 million and has received a 250,000 subsidy from the local Anglican diocese.Lesley Scordellis, lead fundraiser for the centre and University of Surrey development manager, told the Times We think it is the first of its kind. It breaks with the tradition of having a shared space for each faith. It is all in the same building but each has a completely separate space. The Jewish space has an exclusive kosher kitchen and the Muslim space has an ablutions facility. The design of the building is to facilitate the feeling that they are in one building about faith.Kitchen cooking and eating practices differ greatly between faiths, with orthodox followers of the Jewish religion required to prepare kosher food with utensils and kitchen-ware that have not been involved in the preparation of non-kosher food.
