LED market could boom in 2010

LED lighting could see an explosive growth in 2010 when production costs are expected to halve on current levels, possibly presenting the British market with more potential for the evolving and increasingly popular technology.DigiTimes reported that Taiwan-based High Power Lighting believes the possibility of an incandescent bulb ban could help galvanise sales, although technological developments are the predominant driving force behind the price drops.Currently it costs 20 (10) for every 1,000 lumens per watt (lm/w) to produce LED lighting, while tungsten lamps cost 0.3 per 1000lm/w and florescent lighting is around 0.6 per 1,000lm/w.However, Charles Wei of High Power Lighting believes that production costs could drop by half in two years time, possibly going down even further with competition and demand. Last month the promise of low-profile linear LED lighting was realised after a partnership was struck between Dailight and the Juno Lighting Group, allowing the production of ultra-slim LEDs that could be used in architecture and under-cabinet lighting.
