Kitchens should be made safe for children

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Homeowners should carefully consider whether their kitchens are safe for children, it has been argued.Beterem, Israels national centre for child safety and health, has argued that there is a sharp rise in the number of children who sustain injuries during the summer holidays because homes are not designed with youngsters in mind, Jpost.com reported. The observation came as the organisation launched a campaign aimed at uniting child safety activists with interior designers and architects.Commenting on possible dangers in the kitchen, Beterem director Orly Silbinger noted that kitchen countertops are often too low, floors can be slippery, microwave ovens are sometimes easily accessible and heavy objects can often be pulled away from walls.Meanwhile, Ariella Shneur, chairman of Israels Association of Interior Design Architects, called on designers to adopt a set of standards that would ensure better child safety in the kitchen and throughout the home.Last week, Joan De Merell, a sales associate in the bath department of US home design store Klaffs, wrote for newstimes.com that stainless steel kitchen sinks are a favoured option among homeowners because they offer easier maintenance and installation.
