Food waste prevention has been labelled as the biggest potential contributor to cutting down carbon dioxide emission and lowering environmental impact in the home.New comments from the Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) highlighted the need for diverse approaches to be undertaken to make the most of the potential for kitchen waste and consequently overall waste to be greatly diminished.WRAP chief executive Liz Goodwin said at the groups annual review We throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food every year thats 20 per cent of everything we all put in our bins each week. If we could reduce that to 15 per cent, it would the equivalent to filling Wembley Stadium twice. In addition, if we implement food waste collections, then we remove a large element of the biodegradable fraction from the waste bin, she added.Ms Goodwins comments came amid WRAPs new drive to reduce consumer reduce consumer food waste a full 100,000 tonnes by March 2008.People responding to WRAPs campaigns may look to new designs for kitchens, from the installion of waste disposal units in sinks to the inclusion of recycling bins for plastics and glass.
