Kitchens and bathrooms top US renovation list

A recent survey has found that 23 percent of US residents planning a remodelling project in the next two years will be upgrading their kitchen. Twenty-eight percent plan a bathroom renovation. When it comes to financial investment, the most money is spent on kitchen upgrades. Over the last five years, almost four in ten home improvement dollars have been spent on kitchens, with this trend likely to continue. In the past five years, an average 28,030 was spent on new kitchens although investment varies significantly at different budget levels. Homeowners spent an average of 54,942 for a high-end kitchen, 22,390 for a mid-range kitchen and 7,133 for a lower-budget kitchen. The 2013 Houzz Home survey also found that the more homeowners plan to spend on their kitchen renovation, the more likely they are to go over budget. Fifty-six percent of those doing a high-end renovation, 42 percent of those who did a mid-range renovation and 31 percent of those whose upgrade was lower-budget spent more than expected. A majority of the homeowners surveyed who are planning to complete a project in the next two years will hire a general contractor (58 percent) and 36 percent intend to hire a kitchen or bathroom specialist. Twenty-three percent plan to hire architects and 22 percent interior designers. When it comes to deciding on which professional to hire, 67 percent of homeowners rated a personality I can work with as very important.
