Kitchen waste composting must rise

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Nowhere is recycling a greater priority than in frequent use kitchen areas, but composting experts have claimed that kitchen waste is not factoring highly among recyclables left out for collection.A survey from the Composting Association found that only one per cent of municipal composted waste came from curb-side kitchen biodegradables, suggesting that more could be done by homeowners to match government efforts on composting.A factor perhaps reducing the levels of curb-side food waste is the use of home sink waste disposal units from InSinkErator and other manufacturers, allowing homeowners to grind up their own food waste.Jeremy Jacobs, acting chief executive at the Composting Association, explained that the capacity was there for people to recycle food waste, should they wish to leave it out for the council. He said Although only a small proportion of biowastes composted were foods and animal by-products, survey respondents estimated that two million tonnes of new treatment capacity will become operational over the next five years. This, he added, signals local government and industry commitment to recovering higher proportions of these valuable secondary resources.
