Kitchen taps can accommodate special needs

A couple have demonstrated how they designed a kitchen to be highly suited to a son with special needs.Bob and Kathy Anger were able to build a kitchen in which all appliances could be easily used by their son Greg, who has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair, the couple told House and Home. One of the main innovations was the installation of kitchen taps at the back of the stove to allow Greg to fill up pots on the cooking surface, rather than having to transport water from the kitchen sink. The article found that other additions to help Greg included functional kitchen cabinets such as a microwave drawer in which the oven pulls out to a low level and food is placed in from the top.The Angers experience reflects a larger trend with kitchen cabinetry as it adjusts to fit the needs of a changing, more diverse population, said House and Home.Interior designer Gene Abel recently told Indystar.com that kitchen sink areas could also be highly flexible kitchen features which incorporate a range of functions, such as food disposal and waste recycling.
