Kitchen sink drains require cleaning attention

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Homeowners have been urged to ensure they thoroughly clear out drains when cleaning the kitchen sink.Kelly Reynolds, an environmental microbiologist at the University of Arizona, US, has noted that a sink drain can harbour more than 500,000 bacteria per square inch, infozine.com reported.Speaking to the website about the finding, Mary Meck Higgins, Kansas State University Research and Extension nutrition specialist, advised wearing protective gloves and mixing one tablespoon of chlorine bleach with four cups of water to scrub the basin of the sink. She then recommended pouring the solution down the drain to clean it twice a week.Kitchen sponges also harbor germs, said Higgins, who suggested adding sponges to the drying cycle of the dishwasher to sanitize them, or using dish cloths and towels that can be changed on a daily basis, laundered and disinfected in hot soapy water with a little chlorine bleach and vinegar added to the wash cycle, reported infozine.com.ADNFCR-1321-ID-800310115-ADNFCR
