Kitchen sink demonstrates complex physics concept

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Researchers have been able to demonstrate that it is possible to create a complex physics phenomenon known as a white hole inside a simple kitchen sink.A team of French researchers from the Universite de Nice Sophia Antipolis conducted tests to determine why, when running water flows into the kitchen sink, the edge of the water takes on a circular, lip-like form known as a hydraulic jump, Softpedia.com reported.According to the website, hydraulic jumps have fascinated physicists for many years because it is very difficult to explain why it is that water height changes so drastically there. In a new research paper, the French team claims to have proved that the circular hydraulic jump represents a white hole - a phenomenon that does not allow light or matter in and that could theoretically develop in the average sink if the flow at the edge of the water front is traveling faster than waves can travel.
