A young engineering student from Wiltshire has won several awards at an international science fair in the US for inventing a gadget that detects kitchen fires. James Popper, 18, from Marlborough College, received acclaim at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in California for his CookerSmart design, which detects saucepan fires without setting off false alarms by identifying infrared in the flames, the BBC reported. Mr Popper won the US Government Patent and Trademark Office Society Award as well as the United Technologies Corporation Prize, scooping cash awards, two scholarships, company shares and a grant for his school. He was joined at the event by fellow student Simon Brookes from Balcarras School in Gloucestershire, who presented his theft-protection design for vehicles. Both young engineers had previously won awards at the Big Bang Fair, which was held in Manchester in March. In other news, in an article for NorthJersey.com recently, Cipriano Landscape Design in the US claimed that outdoor kitchens are becoming an increasingly popular option among homeowners who wish to boost the value of their property and make it more suitable for entertaining guests.
