Kitchen renovations on the rise

Kitchen and home renovations are likely to rise in 2013, according to the Home Builders Association. Many homeowners are making the decision to improve, rather than move, in order to stay in the same neighbourhood, and/or while they wait for housing values to rebound from the downturn, says Home Builders Association public relations spokesperson Valerie Heritage. Remodelling is a great option for those that have made a decision to stay in their home but also desire upgrades or a new, enhanced living space, she adds. According to the Home Builders Association, kitchens and bathrooms remain the most popular rooms to remodel. Trends are favouring granite surfaces and the upgrading of essential items such as kitchen sinks and taps. Open designs with lighter colour schemes are proving popular. Many homeowners are also opting to renovate by resurfacing or refacing cabinet areas, rather than replacing them, and then adding new sinks and other fixtures. Outdoor kitchens, fireplaces and fire pits are also likely to trend this year as the weather improves as are energy-efficient upgrades such as instant boiling water taps in the kitchen and combination boilers.
