Kitchen project reveals ancient murals

A kitchen renovation in Guatemala has led to it becoming a site of major archeological discovery after centuries-old Mayan murals were discovered under layers of paint. Lucas Asicona Ramirez discovered the ancient paintings after he started removing plaster in his kitchen in the town of Chajul. Archaeologist Jaroslaw Zralka told the magazine National Geographic that one of the Mesoamerican murals depicted a procession of figures dressed in a mix of traditional Maya and Spanish dress, with some appearing to be holding human hearts. Boston University archeologist William Saturno has suggested the murals might represent a conquest dance, a still-performed Maya ritual that depicts both the Spanish invasion and Maya conversion to Christianity. Archeologists are working hard to decipher the meaning behind the murals before they fade as a result of exposure. However, Saturno says it is incredible that the murals even survived in the first place. We dont get a lot of this type of artwork. Its not commonly preserved in the New World, said.
