Homeowners risk creating poorly designed rooms if they take on too much during a DIY renovation, it has been suggested.Professional builder Rov Dosanjh told the Times Colonist that because DIY renovators are concerned with saving money, many will not pay for an inspection by a licensed tradesperson. He said that this can result in ill-conceived and unsafe designs.People just watch all those do-it-yourself shows on TV and think they can do a quick fix, added Mr Dosanjh.Meanwhile, interior designer Russ Collins told the newspaper that people are often tempted to force unsuitable design styles on a home.Regarding kitchen designs, the Washington Post suggested that the popularity of ripping down walls to create an open-plan space may not last. Maybe in 15 years, people wont want to look at the kitchen clutter from the living room, it said.Earlier this month, Diana Schrage, an interior designer for the Kohler Design Center in the US, told JSOnline that people can quickly change the appearance of their kitchens by replacing features like taps, hardware or cabinetry. She suggested that kitchen taps can be both sculptural and practical, creating a vibrant focal point in a room.
