Kitchen owners want specialist work zones

Kitchen owners are choosing to create separate work zones to cater for their specialist food and drink interests, an expert has said. Writing for Freep.com, Neil Wertheimer, editor-in-chief of Fresh Home magazine, said this does not require a major kitchen makeover as work zones could be created out of existing counter space. This could include making new use of a kitchen sink area. Most cooks have a specialty, but rarely in the past did we create kitchens to accommodate it. The trend now is to add coffee bars, wine storage and tasting nooks, pizza-making stations or even baking centers based on personal interests, said Mr Wertheimer. In considering other cost-saving kitchen changes, Mr Wertheimer said that the use of salvaged materials is a good option given that the supply of available old materials is endless. He added that instead of hiring a salvage company to help retrofit a kitchen, homeowners could simply head to a market in search of vintage furniture or utensils.Bruce Curtis, owner of the home remodelling firm Washtenaw Woodwrights, recently wrote for AnnArbor.com that the wide range of eco-friendly materials now available means that homeowners should make careful selections when deciding to go green.
