A couple who won a kitchen makeover contest are planning to make the room more functional by adding countertop space.Larissa and Tim Gilchrist won the Edmonton Journals makeover contest which included a gift card for new cabinets and a one-hour consultation with a design expert. The couple told the newspaper that their priority was to add work surfaces in the kitchen sink and food preparation areas. When Im cooking, I just find theres no counter space. Typically, you start to make dinner and you run out of space really quickly, said Ms Gilchrist. In addition, the homeowners pointed out that their current countertops are made up of square tiles which creates an uneven, hard-to-clean surface. The couple plan to replace them with a smoother surface while also adding a backsplash and a central kitchen island. This week, Carole Porter, owner of the design firm Kitchen Arts in the US, suggested in an interview with the Issaquah Press that new, ergonomic drawer units are replacing traditional kitchen cabinets.
