Kitchen lighting should be a combination of layers

Kitchen owners can use a combination of lighting fixtures to alter the look of the room, a design commentator has said.Writing for the Washington Post, Domenica Marchetti said that she is unhappy with the clinical glare created by the fluorescent light fixtures located above her kitchen sink and central island. The effect is far from soothing, and in fact rather unsettling, as though my kitchen were a morgue and my island an autopsy table, she said. However, Ms Marchetti added that she is encouraged by the wide range of lighting options that are now available. She spoke to various lighting experts and designers who noted that kitchen lighting can now be provided in layers that are located in different areas of the room. These can include recessed ceiling fixtures, accent lighting or under cabinet lighting, Ms Marchetti found, allowing lighting to change depending on the scene.According to a recent survey of interior designers by Metro Canada, bold, striking colours will be increasingly adopted in kitchen designs this year.
