One in six UK home owners are dissatisfied with the size of their rooms, according to new research. A survey of 2,000 home owners by Rated People.com has found that larger rooms come top of the list for the most important criteria when moving house. More than 70 per cent also revealed that they would not want to live in a home built since the 1990s, with 22 per cent saying they believed rooms in older properties were larger. Dermot Steedman, owner of Dermarta, a building firm in London, said kitchen extensions had become extremely popular as more and more home owners looked to extending their properties. Ive seen a noticeable rise over the past couple of years in the number of extension and conversion projects being undertaken by homeowners, he said. The most popular projects in recent years have been single story extensions at the rear of properties to create open plan kitchen living space. This type of extension tends to cost between 20,000 and 40,000, and loft conversions, which offer more scope to create extra bedrooms and bathrooms, typically cost from 15,000 up to about 50,000.
