Designers and homeowners should avoid over-accessorising when renovating a kitchen, an expert has said.Interior stylist Leanne Brownoff wrote for the Canwest News Service that it is important to understand the architectural style of a space in order to achieve a balanced design. An open-concept home with soaring ceilings and minimal walls will be well-suited to a strong but clean, contemporary look. A home designed in a traditional period will welcome a layered environment, she added.Ms Brownoff said that in rooms with stunning features such as a fireplace, detailed mouldings or a kitchen island, the decor should enhance such elements rather than compete with them. She suggested that in rooms with smooth, shiny surfaces around the kitchen sink, homeowners should seek to add an attractive light fixture or piece of art that will catch the eye.Last month, interior designers Jasmine Madson and Heidi Coatsworth told the Argus Leader that removing clutter is an inexpensive but effective way of remodelling a home.
