Kitchen designers need to think outside the triangle

Kitchen designers need to think outside the triangle and move away from the traditional view, one designer says.Bonnie Schut, owner of Kitchen Design Studio, claims the need for different work zones, such as preparation, storage, cooking and cleaning areas, as well as different appliances, demands more consideration and creativity from designers, Mlive.com reports. The traditional work triangle was devised by the University of Illinois Small Homes Council in the 1950s and is the space between the sink, cooker and fridge. But the news provider says this approach may no longer be the best, as the kitchen is becoming the social hub of the home and is used by multiple cooks. It quotes figures from the National Kitchen and Bath Association, which show that 30 to 35 per cent of kitchens planned today are for more than one cook and adds that the advent of the microwave started the move away from the traditional triangle. The Poughkeepsie Journal reported earlier this month that the purpose and aesthetics of the kitchen sink have evolved.
