Homeowners who want to refurbish their kitchens using more environmentally-friendly products have been given some tips on design.Kirsten Flynn, interior designer from the company Sustainable Home, told Palo Alto Online environmentalism has always been an interest of hers - and she is now teaching classes on its use in decor. Work surfaces, flooring and wall materials are covered in the class, as Ms Flynn believes homeowners should have the opportunity to learn about environmental alternatives. Not everyone has the inclination and resources to hire an eco-designer, but everyone deserves to know about these techniques and products, she said. Eco-friendly products can be good for health too and Ms Flynn recommends using low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints that cause less short and long-term health effects than standard paints. People looking for a new kitchen look may want to consider reclaimed wood work surfaces too designs that may complement a white ceramic sink from Astracast or Franke. Furthermore, choosing a good-quality sink and tap set in a timeless style may mean replacing them less often to stay in fashion.
