Kitchen design competition makes space count

Kitchen design enthusiasts were given the chance to pitch their style visions to a panel of interior design experts at the inaugural US Diamond Designs Contest, with spatial innovations winning the day.Organised by home specialist Diamond Cabinets, contestants entered the competition hoping to provide the best blueprint for kitchen space in three different categories gourmet cook kitchen, busy family kitchen and entertaining kitchen.Designers taking part submitted photos of their style-savvy kitchens, with design statements also meeting the critical eyes of industry professionals such as Kimberly Sweet of kitchens.com and Linda Ohm of CabinetMaker.Winning entries were rewarded for their inventive use of space Diane Gewirtz took the prize in the gourmet cooks kitchen area by submitting shots of restoration work she was undertaking to open up a clients kitchen.She made particularly good use of a relatively small space, Diamonds judges were reported as saying, praising Ms Gewirtzs work in opening up kitchen space by bringing it into an open-plan living area.Meanwhile, the busy family kitchen category was won by Florida designer Laurene Schwenke, who overcame hurricane damage in the midst of renovation work, as well as space limitations, in creating a practical and stylish cooking space.We were waiting on the countertops when the electricity went down all of Broward County was dark for a few weeks, said Ms Schwenke, before explaining the structural changes to her busy kitchen design which allowed lots of appliances to be packed into a small but workable space.
