Jubilee prompts Fifties kitchens comeback

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Maybe it is Diamond Jubilee fever, but Fifties kitchens are back in style. The Fifties had a lot to recommend them, along with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. For example, the Fifties look is one of the smartest ways to style your home. It strikes a chord with our modern fascination with clean, modern lines. As Princess Elizabeth prepared for her Coronation, a wealth of ideas and colours were transforming kitchens across the country. Now we are falling in love with them all over again. The good news is that what was then high-end is readily accessible now. Marks Spencer has invited Sir Terence Conran to design a collection using British materials and craftsmen. The design studio at John Lewis has also been working on its own retro designs and has gone to Ercol, makers of the bentwood tables and chairs of the Fifties, and asked them to recreate their designs. Its so exciting to see it come alive again. Were proud that its British, says Jason Wilary-Attew, head of furniture buying at John Lewis. There was a real belief then that the future was bright and were harking back to that positivity. The Jubilee has revived a sense of pride in being British. Whoever would have thought that its influence would stretch to kitchen styles?
