How to prevent burst pipe water damage

If you are planning a holiday this winter, you might be wondering whether or not to turn off your water supply to guard against damage from burst pipes. Daryll Bailey, owner of AMTC Plumbing of Medford, advises. If youre going to be away from your home for any extended period of time, its a good idea to turn off water on the meter. He also suggests opening a tap, ideally in the kitchen, to relieve any pressure whilst you are out of the property for an extended period of time. Even though theres not going to be water, open it up to relieve built-up pressure from the meter side, he says. He adds that it is also a good idea to keep kitchen sink cabinet and bathroom vanity doors open to ensure heat gets to them. It does keep some warmth in there, he says. He also recommends shutting off the power to the water heater when on shorter trips. Theres no need to have the water heater on during a weeks trip, he said. Its just going to keep the water hot while youre gone. Other advice includes disconnecting washing machine hoses, due to the fact that they are pressurised and could fail whilst you are away.
