How to make kitchen appear larger

Making a kitchen appear larger is a big challenge but can be realised with decorating and furnishing tips, one interior designer says.Lesley Watt, design director of Obelisk Interiors, states that walls and floors have a lot to do with adding or removing the feeling of space and colour-coordinated walls are one of the main ways of creating the sensation of spaciousness. I would recommend sticking to a neutral or pale palette of colours, she advises.Continuity of colours throughout the home is important, while a uniformed floor covering can help rooms flow into each other, Ms Watt adds.Floor tiles can be placed diagonally to help the kitchen appear larger, she suggests and low ceilings can be made to appear higher by painting them a lighter shade than the walls. With professional help and a little imagination, there are plenty of ways of making a smaller property appear more spacious and just because you are short of space, there is no reason to be short on style, she concludes.Home and Garden Television recommends that up to 50 per cent of the budget for a kitchen makeover should be allocated to cabinets, around a third to appliances, a quarter to countertops, 15 per cent to flooring and the rest to lighting.
