Homeowners can tackle simple DIY jobs

People planning home improvement projects such as installing a new kitchen sink or sink accessories may not need to call in professionals.Homeowners should be encouraged to take on basic projects themselves, according to AA Home Rescue.The home repair service says some tasks can be mastered by DIY enthusiasts if they are showed the techniques.Sue Beeson, spokeswoman for AA Home Rescue, said Being able to put up a picture hook ... putting up a shelf ... all those sorts of things most people would be able to do.If homeowners were taught the necessary skill, knowledge and care, they would be able to accomplish basic DIY tasks, she added.However, AA Home Rescue warns that anything involving electrics or gas should be left to the professionals.DIY projects such as fitting a new kitchen sink could be more popular in 2011.Travis Perkins, owner of Wickes hardware store, has reported a revenue boost of 20 per cent in 2010, with pre-tax profits of 217 million.
