A new home design survey has detected a new enthusiasm for innovative green materials in the kitchen, while homeowners have shown a will to turn their backs on ornate and luxurious items. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) home-design survey for the second quarter of 2007 found that the demand for high-end kitchen and bathroom appliances such as towel-warming drawers is falling away while eco-friendly materials are in.Kitchens are said to be taking on a markedly different style, as demand grows for fashionable green flooring products such as bamboo and cork and traditional flooring tiles lose their appeal.Architect John Connell, a member of the AIAs housing committee, highlighted the importance people were attaching to simple green design approaches in areas like the kitchen and the bathroom. He said None of the more sexy energy-saving installations - small windmills on the roof, photovoltaic panels, solar-water collectors - make any sense until youve done your insulation, weatherstripping and other fundamentals. The Institute gathered its results by questioning 500 architectural firms on consumer demand for multiple kitchen and bathroom items.
