Future of home design is unrecognisable

The home design of the next century could be completely unrecognisable from todays, according to insurer Zurich. Carrying out research in tandem with architecture firm Arup Associates, Zurich claimed that huge changes both inside and out will be needed for houses to respond to the challenges of the next century.Among the changes tipped for homes by 2080 were innovations allowing self-heating as well as self-cooling, with climate change and energy efficiency evidently identified as key challenges in the coming decade.Sinks and taps look set to retain a key role, with Zurich also forecasting that under more volatile rainfall patters, homes would be adapted to collect and store their own rainwater and sustainable drainage systems, in order to keep taps flowing and water waste at a minimum.Martin Horsler from Zurich said that history shows that we cant predict the future with absolute certainty, but we can prepare for it, indicating that houses would adapt to dramatic demographic and climactic changes. Many people in the UK and elsewhere are already adapting their home design and lifestyles in favour of sustainability, with waste reducing devices like In-Sink-Erators sink waste disposal unit set to play an increasing role in future household planning.
