Fix taps to save water

Homeowners can save water and cut the rising price of energy bills by replacing worn washers and fixing leaky taps.The Consumer Council for Water has issued a series of tips for cutting water waste and saving money during 2009.Most of the advice focuses on water use in the kitchen. The organisation suggests that kettles are only filled with the amount of water needed, pointing out that two-thirds of Britons waste energy by boiling more water than necessary.Undermount sinks, taps and sink plumbing should be checked for leaks to prevent any water waste from undiscovered drips, while hot water thermostats should be set at 60 degrees C.Dame Yve Buckland, chair of the Consumer Council for Water, said At a time when so many household bills are rising, people may be looking for ways to make every penny count. Taking five minutes to consider these water and energy saving tips could pay off in the long run, and have the added benefit of helping to reduce your carbon footprint.
