Going green does not have to break the bank. Here are five tips for making you home more environmentally friendly for less than 100. 1. Switch to energy efficient light bulbs - Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs) is an excellent way to save both energy and money. It will also save time in the long run, as you will not need to keep replacing them. 2. Use low VOC paint - Using low VOC paint will improve your homes air quality. Use paints, sealants and coatings with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Volatile organic compounds are chemicals that are emitted from solids and liquids, including paints and other household products. 3. Insulate your water heater - Insulating your hot water heater is cheap, easy and will save money and energy. A water insulating jacket costs just a few pounds and can be fitted in an hour or less. 4. Seal and weatherize your house - Sealing air leaks in your house is a very cost-effective way of saving money and energy. Seal any wall penetrations to the outdoors that have been made for pipes and cables, plumbing, or air conditioning. 5. Install a programmable thermostat - A programmable thermostat allows you to automatically adjust your homes temperature based on the time of day. This means that you can set the thermostat to increase or decrease your homes temperature based on whether youre at home.
