Firefighters promote kitchen safety for Shrove Tuesday

People planning to make pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday need to add fire safety to the recipe, firefighters have warned.Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is helping families in the area to avoid fat and chip pan fires, reports the Westmorland Gazette.Simple measures can help people to stay safe while preparing their Pancake Day feasts.A spokesman for the service told the newspaper [When] sprinkling pancakes with lemon juice and sugar, fire safety is probably the last thing on your mind.However, fat and chip pan fires ... could kill.The fire service advises not to leave pans unattended, and ensure they are taken off the heat if you leave the room.If a frying pan does catch fire, homeowners are advised not to try and tackle it themselves and should not throw water from the kitchen sink over it.Smoke alarms also help families to escape unharmed, the newspaper reports.More than half of accidental fires in the home start because of something to do with cooking, according to Directgov.ADNFCR-1321-ID-800449280-ADNFCR
