Families told to turn off the taps

Rationing of water in homes, including turning taps off while brushing teeth, will be vital to preventing supplies running out in future decades, according to Government ministers. The warning was issued this month after ministers revealed that only substantial cuts in water use would save families from feeling the impact of climate change and rising population levels. Average water usage in many areas is approximately 160 litres per person per day the equivalent of two baths. This includes everything from getting washed to watering the garden or drinking a cup of coffee. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman has published a white paper designed to cut domestic water usage by almost 20per cent by 2030. The aim is to stop people from regarding water as free. Household water meters will be imposed in many regions, particularly the south and east. However, the government also wants changes in lifestyle to contribute to its reduction goal. It suggests placing a jug of tap water in the fridge to provide for a cold drink when required, rather than repeatedly running a tap. It also advises householders to wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl rather than under the tap and to turn off the tap when brushing teeth or shaving.
