Essex council launches fight against food waste

An area of Essex is taking a lead on tackling unnecessary food waste that is sent to landfill, according to local paper the Echo. Launching its Love Food, Hate Waste campaign, Rochford District Council is looking to impose new measures to cut down on the disposal of food waste along with non-recyclables. Some councils across the country are looking to encourage the use of waste disposal units as an environmentally friendly response to food waste, with subsidies offered for the purchase of products from InSinkErator and other waste management specialists. But for Rochford, the Echo claimed that residents will be encouraged to put out their kitchen leftovers for composting, thanks to a new bin system. Two additional bins will be provided by the local council, with one reserved exclusively for the disposal of kitchen waste and garden cuttings. The council is aiming to instruct locals on the environmental cost of sending food waste to landfill, where in the absence of oxygen the process of biodegrading produces the greenhouse gas methane.
