Energy labeling system criticised

Posted by Sinks on 27th Jun 2017

Fed-up retailers are calling for an end to the confusion surrounding the current appliance energy labeling system. As more and more appliance manufacturers produce more eco efficient products, retailers want the current labeling system to be standardized, saying that it is confusing for customers. Their complaints centre on the fact that there are currently two different energy labeling systems in operation, with some products having changed to the new A, A++, A+++ standard and others still on the old A to G ratings. The confusion is made worse because some manufacturers are using an A-10percent and A-20percent system in their literature and p-o-s that has not been approved by the EU, they say. Sian Lewis, association executive at white goods manufacturers association Amdea, said The A minus system is used by manufacturers to show that its appliances are better than the A rating and it was proposed to the governing body but rejected. Manufacturers cannot use this system on their labels but they can use the rating on their websites. Roger Sargant of RDO Appliances said I think there is a general recognition, particularly with the minus ratings, that its not working too well. Ms Lewis said that from March 30 retailers must display the A+ rating label on refrigeration products. From April 20 retailers must display new labels for dishwashers and washing machines. She said the introduction of different dates for different products was unhelpful. With TVs and air conditioning, and tumble dryers and washer-dryers for example, there are the new labels coming in now and will have to be displayed in the coming months, she added.
