Pre-fabricated homes may remove the pleasure of selecting individual sinks, taps, cabinets and appliances for a new kitchen, but experts claim that elements of the building style are gaining popularity. Still associated with the low-quality houses erected at break-neck speed to answer post-war housing shortages, factory-manufactured homes were claimed by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) to have much to offer.Government housing strategy has set a target of three million new homes being built in the UK by 2020, with pre-fabricated home construction one of the potential ways of meeting the requisite levels. John Slaughter of the HBF said Its hard to categorise because there are so many different systems and there are things like bathroom and kitchen pods that can be built largely off-site and then installed in houses. There is some increase in volumes of prefabricated housing and probably the area thats most visible in that respect would be in relation to timber frames where youve got frame assembly off-site.Modern pre-fabricated kitchen pods are no longer confined to purely functional, low-cost solutions, but increasingly carry a more marked style imprint, sometimes on futuristic lines.
