Eco-homes challenges underway in Staffordshire

The burgeoning eco-homes initiative in the UK will receive a boost with a challenge to construct dwellings in the spaces of four days, it has emerged.At the Burslem campus of Stoke-on-Trent College the benefits of so-called flat pack homes will be demonstrated in this intriguing test, reports the Sentinel.The challenge is part of the wider Nu Build project run by Renew North Staffordshire development agency.Stoke-on-Trent Colleges head of engineering and construction, Ken Burgess, told the newspaper Using traditional methods, its increasingly difficult for builders to hit these standards.The construction industry needs to learn new skills and begin to diversify to enable it to meet exacting Government guidelines on sustainability which just cannot be achieved with traditional building methods.One completed, the homes will be the only ones in the country available to train students in these new cutting-edge approaches to construction.A number of firms around the world are pioneering the use of flat-pack house construction, from the kind of specificially eco-friendly type being built in Staffordshire to bespoke, custom-built designs from German firm Huf.
