UK home improvement retailers should hold evening classes to help fix the ailing DIY skills of the countrys young adults, it has been argued.Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, suggested that DIY stores could be used to plug the generational gap that exists when it comes to kitchen renovations and other, everyday home jobs.BQ and Homebase, and organisations like that, perhaps ought to be holding evening classes for young householders so they can learn ways of improving their house without having to call in the experts, he said. The comments come after a recent survey by Halifax Home Insurance found that over half of young adults lack the fundamental skills to maintain their homes. This could include jobs like installing a new kitchen sink or a set of taps.Sixty-three per cent of under-35s admitted that they would not even attempt to put up wallpaper, while 45 per cent said they would not put up shelves themselves.
