CWC: Dont be throttled by the bottle

A new campaign is setting out to bring Brits back to the tap as the use of bottled water is challenged in homes, restaurants and in the corporate environment. While bottled water may seem a classy option at business meetings and is often offered in place of tap water by restaurateurs, the Consumer Council for Water (CCW) said that people were completely in their rights to request free tap water.Urging them to challenge the norm, the group pointed not only to the extortionate cost of mineral water for diners, but also the cost to the environment, with research indicating that 33,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions are created by annual UK bottled water transportation. The CCW claimed that the wide use of bottled water was especially senseless given the quality of UK tap-water with advanced filtration-enabled taps like Frankes tri-flow models adding further purity controls to British tap water.Dame Yve Buckland, CCW chair, told Business Green We have some of the cleanest tap water in the world and it is far more sustainable than bottling water, shipping it round the country and then having to dispose of the plastic. We believe drinking water should be freely available in public places and we want to challenge the culture that makes you feel a bit cheap for ordering tap water in restaurants.
